The foreign bodies that can get stuck into the nose may most commonly be the food material such as nuts or some small inanimate things. Such events usually occur in children unknowingly while playing.
If in your family, you find someone with foreign bodies in the nose especially in the child, you can try out few first aid measures. These may dislodge the foreign body and provide relief to the person.
Avoid inspecting the nose with any equipment as any such attempt may push the object back in the nose. However if you feel that the object can be picked up using hands, you can try after you are sure that it will work out.
Instruct the person to avoid nose breathing; encourage him to breathe through the mouth. Nose breathing may cause the foreign body to get pushed back due to the air inhaled.
Ask the person to blow the nose gently while keeping the unobstructed nostril closed. This may force the foreign body out of the nose.
Sometimes inducing sneeze may help to get the foreign body to the exterior.
Call for medical help in case the above measures fail to dislodge the foreign body from the nose or you notice complications such as nose bleeding, difficulty in breathing or signs of infection.
