It is not necessary that the foreign bodies lodge only the cavities such as nose or ears; sometimes the skin may be pierced by the foreign objects which may be a glass particle or small pieces of wood or glass.
It causes pain, irritation and discomfort to the person.
First aid measures to dislodge the object from the skin:
Wash your hands with soap and water. Pat them dry.
If the object is visible attempt to remove it using clean cotton gauze or sterile tweezers. You can press around the affected area to allow the object to project out which can then be pulled out easily.
If the object is deeply embedded, one can use sterilised needle to dislodge it.
You can sterilise the needle either using alcohol or keeping it under flame.
Wash the affected area with soap and water. Break the skin over the foreign body using the sterile needle. Try to lift up the visible object using needle, ultimately removing with the help of tweezers.
The skin may bleed after this procedure so let it bleed and then clean with soap and water. Apply some antibiotic ointment if needed.
Seek medical assistance if you are unable to dislodge the foreign object from the skin or the object is nearer to the eyes or you notice signs of infection.
